Leola Mae (Holt) Nicholas, 96, Savannah, Missouri passed from this life Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home, Savannah. Leola was born April 9, 1912 at Helena, Missouri to Harold and Alma (Thomann) Holt. She moved to Savannah in 1929 with her family where her father was the Andrew County Sheriff for four years. Her first job was working for her uncle in a grocery store on weekends and summers. Leola graduated from Savannah High School in 1930. She then graduated from Platt-Gard Business College in 1932. Leola married Roy Nicholas on September 17, 1933 at Savannah, Missouri. Roy preceded her in death on January 8, 1996. She worked at Swanson’s Market for 7 years and the Home Bank for 20 years, retiring as Assistant Cashier in 1977. Leola played for funerals and weddings since 1929; was a member of Savannah First Baptist Church, where she was pianist and organist since 1932; church historian; Sunday School teacher for over 50 years; missions leader for many years; charter member of Andrew County Historical Society; Andrew County Museum; R.S.V.P.; Kut-Ups-Andrew County Quilting Group; B.P.W. Women of the Year in 1983. Leola’s hobbies were needle work, knitting, crocheting, painting, cooking, flower arranging, reading, music, walking and most of all traveling. She traveled in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, twice in Europe, the Holy Land and Jordan. Her parents; and sisters, Estella Nold and Mary Kathryn Reece; also preceded Leola in death. Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Margo Nicholas, Waterloo, Iowa; Paul and Barbara Nicholas, Arvada, Colorado; daughter, Lynn Jane Nicholas Sapp, Fenton, Missouri; sister, Florine Yost, St. Joseph; 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Allen, Randall Nicholas, Holly Cashen, David and Tim Nicholas; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life: 2:00 PM Thursday, July 3 at Savannah First Baptist Church; 500 E. Pawnee, Savannah, Missouri. Interment at Savannah Cemetery. Public viewing and family receiving hours from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Breit-Hawkins & Gladden Funeral Home, Savannah. Memorial donations to Savannah First Baptist Church or Andrew County Museum.
