Helen Frances (Roscoe) Laughlin, the daughter of Lee Joseph and Blanche Gertrude Shunick Roscoe was born June 12, 1915 on a farm near Farragut, Fremont County, Iowa and passed away on February 4, 2011 at the age of 95. Helen spent most of her life in Mills and Fremont County, Iowa until she moved to Lincoln, NE to live with her daughter in 2005. She attended country school in Iowa and Missouri until the eighth grade then attended Shenandoah High School, graduating in the Class of 1934. She studied at American Beauty College, Omaha, NE and was employed at Military Beauty Shop, Omaha, NE. On June 2, 1938 she was united in marriage to Matthew J. Laughlin at St. Mary Catholic Church, Shenandoah, and after their marriage they made their home in Fremont and Mills Counties, Iowa. Helen was active in 4-H, served many years as 4-H leader in Mills County, on the 4-H Council and the Mills County Fair Board, and was named Outstanding 4-H (girls clubs) Alumna for 1961. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She served on the Parish Council, and was a member of the St. Patrick Centennial Committee in 1980. Along with Mrs. Margaret (Marty) Laughlin, she co-compiled A Century of Memories 1880-1980, the Centennial history of St. Patrick Church, Imogene, and these two were responsible for the nomination of St. Patrick Church to the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a National Historic Landmark. With her daughter, Joan, she compiled Laughlin Linkages, Descendants of Patrick Laughlin (1819-1884) and Mary Quinn (1820-1914) in 1987 and Roscoe Roots, Descendants of David A. Roscoe and Mary C. Fero in 1988. She was an active member of the Southwest Iowa Historical Society and served on the Fremont County Historical Board. She was a member of the D. A. R. Chapter, Shenandoah. She enjoyed needlework and reading, and was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Matt Laughlin; daughter Blanche Laughlin, and sons, Edward L. Laughlin and John Laughlin, grandson Douglas Laughlin; brother Jack Roscoe and sister Mary Kaye York, nephews, Andrew York, Larry Lee Greedy, and Dennis Greedy; daughter-in-law Mary Feld Laughlin; sisters-in-law Lucille Laughlin Jardon and Verena Roscoe; brothers-in-law Louis Laughlin, Robert Jardon, Lyle Latimer, Richard Greedy and Richard O. York. Surviving her are four children and their spouses, thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Her children and spouses include: Mark Laughlin and his wife Susan of Omaha, NE; David Laughlin and his wife, Sherri of Scottsdale, AZ; Leo Laughlin and his wife, Carol of Pella, IA; and Joan Laughlin of Lincoln, NE. Grandma Helenís grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren include: Damian Laughlin [son of Doug], Des Moines, IA; Matthew and Gay Laughlin and their children Grady, Maisie and Jack of Carlisle, IA; Ryan and Carrie Laughlin of Des Moines, IA; Jennifer and Edward Yevoli and their children, Sophia, Nicholas and Thomas of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Kathleen and Luke Gorringe and their daughter Phoebe of Cascais, Portugal; Kelly and Jason Jeffreys and their children Evelyn, Charles and Henry of Omaha, NE; Jane Laughlin of Omaha, NE; Mark John Laughlin of Boulder, CO; Jeffrey and Molly Laughlin and their sons Adam and Andy of Overland Park, KS; Stephen and Ali Laughlin and their children Aubrey and Tyson of Overland Park, KS; Timothy and Sara Laughlin and their daughters Caroline and Melanie of Olathe, KS; Christopher Laughlin of Pella, IA; Michelle Laughlin of Minneapolis, MN; and Sherri Laughlin of Des Moines, IA; sisters Mildred Greedy of Wenatchee, WA, Harriette Latimer of Shenandoah, IA; sister-in-law Mary Kathryn Laughlin of Imogene, IA; and twenty-six nieces and nephews, their families and a host of friends.
