Conrad J. Skarbek

Decorated Army Veteran

Conrad J. Skarbek, age 86, of Tonawanda, died suddenly, Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the V.A. Medical Center in Buffalo. Born in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Walter and Ann (nee Mikos) Skarbek and was an Army Veteran serving in the 80th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII; he received the Military Order of the Purple Heart twice for wounds received in combat. Conrad was employed at Trico Products in Buffalo before retiring in 1985, and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish for more than 50 years where he was active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Outreach Program at the Church. Mr. Skarbek was a coach for Tonawanda Baseball Little League and an avid Buffalo Bills fan for more than 50 years. He was the husband of the late Ann (nee Czajkowski) Skarek, who died in 2006, grandfather of the late Elizabeth "Betsy" Lindsay, and brother of the late Leo (Helen) Skarbek.

He is survived by his son, Ronald J. Skarbek of Chicago, Illinois; his daughter, Sharon (late Peter) Lindsay of Tonawanda; his granddaughter, Kathryn (Richard) Kraft of Wheatfield; and two great-grandsons, Peter Jarvis and Henry Conrad Kraft. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary (Victor) Bartkowski and Dorothy (Frank) Zawodzinski, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3-8 PM on Friday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday at St. Francis Chapel on Adam Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited. If desired, memorials for St. Francis Outreach Program, 73 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, or for Mass offerings are preferred by the family.
