Navy Veteran Retired from GM
Gilbert R. Miller, age 89, of Getzville, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 after a long illness, at his residence while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kersey, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Roy and Margaret (nee Pontious) Miller and was a Navy Veteran of WWII. A resident of Getzville for 49 years, he was employed at the General Motors Engine Plant in Tonawanda until retiring, and was an avid outdoor sportsman. Mr. Miller was a member of the American Legion, Jurek Post, in Swormville, a life member of Tonawanda Lodge 247, F.& A.M., and the Tonawanda Sportsmens Club in Pendleton. He was the father of the late Orville and Sheldon Miller, grandfather of the late Wayne Miller, and brother of the late Francis, John and Albert Miller, Mary Smith, and Alice Carr.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth (nee Helwig) Miller, whom he married November 10, 1951 at Salem United Church of Christ in Tonawanda; three daughters, Nancy Miller of Cheektowaga, Kathleen (Sam) Barry of Williamsville, and Jo Ann Hills of Bradford, PA; loving grandfather and best buddy of David Eron, Timothy Barry and Jessica Barry; and grandfather of Michelle Crews, Laurie Mosher, Gloria Huizenga, and Jeanette Overman. Also surviving are 7 great-grandchildren, 5 great, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-9 PM on Tuesday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday; the Rev. Kenneth Comer officiating. Friends invited. Interment at Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 3901 Genesee Street, Suite 110, Buffalo, NY 14225, Camp Good Days & Special Times, 2440 Sheridan Drive, Suite 401, Tonawanda, NY 14150, or Hospice Buffalo, 225 Como Park Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14227, are preferred by the family.
