Mary Ann Berndt, age 81, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Marion (nee Groffenberger) Berndt and was a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. A member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, she belonged to the Ladies of Charity and the choir at the Church, and participated in the Sisters of St. Francis knitting ministry. She was the sister of the late Betty Papoi.

She is survived by her brother, Walter (Frances) Berndt of Tonawanda; and her sister, Eilene Dalton of Tonawanda. Also surviving are two nephews, Mark Berndt and Michael Papoi; and five nieces, Barbara Gornick, Deborah Waneski, Judith Reboy, Amy Ball, and Lisa Fulmer.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Wednesday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday at St. Francis Chapel on Adam Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 73 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
