Sister Richard Barry, SSMN
Teacher, Nurse & Chaplain
Sister Richard Barry, S.S.M.N., died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2007 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst. Born Mary Ann Barry on September 12, 1926 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Ann Mary (nee Conley) Barry. After graduating from Annunciation High School, she entered the order of St. Mary of Namur on October 3, 1943 and took her perpetual vows on August 15, 1952.
Sister Richard had many talents and a strong missionary sense. She taught in several Kenmore schools and spent several years among the poor in Florence, South Carolina. She also made many friends among the Canadian Sisters of St. Mary and taught English in Ottawa in 1978. Sister Richard was known for her exceptional ability to plan, organize and manage several events at the same time. And so, after obtaining her nursing degree in 1981, she joined the staff at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Following that, she received a National Certificate of Clinical Pastoral Education and became the Pastoral Care Chaplain at several local nursing homes, including a sixteen year ministry at McAuley Residence in Kenmore.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Crawford; her brother, Richard (Marcia) Barry; nieces, nephews, and many friends; and her sisters in the congregation of St. Mary of Namur.
Friends may call from 7-9 PM Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 PM Sunday at St. Mary Center, 241 Lafayette Avenue, Buffalo, where a wake service will be held at 8 PM Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM Monday at St. Mary Center Chapel. Friends invited. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to the Sisters of St. Mary Memorial Fund are preferred. Further information about memorial contributions may be found at the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur website, www.ssmn.us.
