Genevieve Alice Berhalter

Retired Tonawanda Teacher

Genevieve (nee McCormick) Berhalter, age 89, of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Weinberg Campus in Amherst. Born January 22, 1915, in Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Jennie (nee Kennedy) McCormick and had been a resident of Tonawanda for the greater part of her life. Her father was a canal boat captain and owned several boats that traveled the Erie Canal between New York City and Buffalo. Mrs. Berhalter was an elementary school teacher in the City of Tonawanda before retiring, and had been active in numerous clubs and organizations including the Tonawanda Education Assn. and New York State Retired Teachers Assn.. She had a great interest and pride that her husband and brothers served our country during World War II, as well as in her Irish heritage. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Berhalter, who died in 1986, and sister of the late James, Thomas, Willard, Donald, and Jerome McCormick.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Berhalter of Tonawanda, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Friday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday at St. Francis Chapel on Adam Street. Friends invited. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
